Queer – Diversity is our Nature

09.04.2021

As part of the special exhibition “Queer – Diversity is our Nature” (Naturhistorisches Museum Bern), you can experience queerness in the animal kingdom live on a tour of the Vivarium in the Bern Zoo. At seven stations you will learn interesting, unexpected and perhaps also familiar facts about gender diversity in the animal kingdom.

Gender diversity in the animal kingdom

Homosexuality, the exchange of affection and sex without procreation are expressions of sexuality that we attribute primarily to humans. But the gender diversity in animals offers much more, for example hermaphrodites, virgin birth or gender reassignment. Let yourself be seduced by the queerness of animals on a tour of the Vivarium. The tour was developed in cooperation with the Natural History Museum Bern as part of the exhibition “Queer – Diversity is our Nature”.

Special exhibition at the Naturhistorisches Museum Bern

The special exhibition “Queer – Diversity is our Nature” (09 April 2021 to 19 March 2023 Naturhistorisches Museum Bern) provides insight into the diversity of genders and sexual orientations in animals and humans. The exhibition spans the gap between nature and culture, between biological findings and current social debates. Even though we use the term “queer” for humans, there is an extraordinary amount of queerness in the animal world. With the growing awareness of diversity in nature, social diversity is also gaining attention
