Nachdem uns die beiden betagten Nashornleguane altersbedingt verlassen haben, wurde ihre ehemalige Anlage f\u00fcr eine andere, stark bedrohte Leguanart aus der Karibik umgebaut: f\u00fcr den Exuma-Wirtelschwanzleguan (Cyclura cychlura figginsi). Exuma-Wirtelschwanzleguane sind vom Aussterben bedroht und die wilde Population ist r\u00fcckl\u00e4ufig. Ihr Verbreitungsgebiet in der Natur beschr\u00e4nkt sich auf acht Inseln der Exuma-Inselkette (Bahamas). Friederike von Houwald ist Tiermedizinerin und seit \u00fcber 20 Jahren in verschiedenen Funktionen im Bereich der Nachhaltigkeit und Tierhaltung im Zoo Basel t\u00e4tig. Juni 1937 fand die feierliche Er\u00f6ffnung des Tierparks, in Anwesenheit von Bundesrat Minger, statt. Mit der Einweihung wurde der B\u00e4rengraben dem Tierparkbetrieb zugeordnet. Entsprechend dem Projekt des Architekten Emil Hostettler zeigte man zu Beginn nur wenige Grosstiere, wie Bison, Lama, M\u00e4hnenschaf und Steinwild. Erbaut wurde der B\u00e4rengraben als Turm aus Sandsteinbl\u00f6cken auf dem Niveau des Br\u00fcckenfusses. Nach Fertigstellung wurde das Areal um den B\u00e4rengraben bis auf das heutige Niveau der Br\u00fccke verf\u00fcllt. Der kleine B\u00e4rengraben wurde erst 1925 erstellt. In ihm Einzug h\u00e4lt der 1513 in der Schlacht von Novara (Norditalien), von den in der heiligen Allianz des Papstes Julius II k\u00e4mpfenden eidgen\u00f6ssische S\u00f6ldner gegen den franz\u00f6sischen K\u00f6nig, erbeutete B\u00e4r. Bartholom\u00e4us May, der damals ber\u00fchmteste Berner, f\u00fchrte den erbeuteten B\u00e4ren mit grossem Pomp in die Stadt. Ab 1764 musste der B\u00e4rengraben am B\u00e4renplatz wie auch sp\u00e4ter seine beiden Nachfolgebauwerke am Golattenmattgass-Tor und im Bereich der Grossen Schanze (ab 1820) der zunehmenden
